In February 2026, Russia fired 288 missiles at Ukraine, the highest monthly figure since the beginning of 2023.

This is according to an analysis by AFP based on daily reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The number of missile strikes more than doubled compared to January (135 missiles), exceeding the previous record of 270 missiles set in October 2025. In addition to missiles, Russia launched 5,059 long-range drones at Ukraine last month, 13% more than in January.

Last winter, which was the harshest for Ukraine since the start of the war, massive Russian shelling of civilian infrastructure led to widespread power and heating outages, leaving hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians without light and heat. Kyiv and EU countries point out that Russia has been deliberately destroying the country’s energy system for the fourth year in a row in an attempt to break the civilian population.

Summing up the winter, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that in three months, Russia had used more than 14,600 guided bombs, 738 missiles, and nearly 19,000 strike drones, mainly Iranian Shaheds, against Ukraine. Rolling blackouts are now taking place across the country to compensate for the network deficit.

In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for high-ranking Russian military officials, accusing them of war crimes for strikes on energy facilities that cause excessive damage to the civilian population of Ukraine.

In response to the actions of the Russian Armed Forces, Ukrainian forces regularly launch drone strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries.
