Famous director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were found dead on Sunday, December 14, in a house in Los Angeles owned by Reiner. This was reported on condition of anonymity by a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing DW.
According to him, the investigation suggests that both victims were stabbed. Investigators are questioning one of the family members.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that it received a call for emergency medical assistance shortly after 3:30 p.m. and found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman in the house without signs of life.
Police investigation
Los Angeles Police Department Captain Mike Bland said that detectives from the Robbery and Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances of the “alleged murder” at Rainer’s home. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identities of the victims. The house is located in the prestigious Brentwood neighborhood in the west of the city, home to many celebrities.
Rainer was one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood and created a number of iconic films of the 1980s and 1990s, including This Is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride. He previously gained fame for his role as Mitchell in the 1970s television series All in the Family, where he starred alongside Carroll O’Connor. For this work, he was awarded two Emmy Awards.
“The heaviest loss for the city”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Rainer’s death the city’s greatest loss.
“Rob Reiner’s contributions have had a profound impact on American culture and society, and he has improved the lives of countless people through his work and his public activism for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, screenwriter and political activist, he has always used his talent for the benefit of others.”
Rob Reiner was the son of the legendary comedian Carl Reiner. Since 1989, he was married to photographer Michelle Singer Rainer, whom he met while working on the movie When Harry Met Sally. The couple has three children. Previously, Rainer was married to actress and director Penny Marshall. Carl Reiner died in 2020, Penny Marshall in 2018.
Murders in the Brentwood neighborhood are extremely rare. Rainer’s house is located about a kilometer and a half from the place where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were killed in 1994.
