The Louvre Museum in Paris has suffered hundreds of publications in the library of the Egyptian antiquities department as a result of an emergency water leak.
This was reported by Le Figaro with reference to the museum administration, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“A total of three hundred to four hundred publications were damaged,” said Francis Steinbock, deputy general administrator of the museum.
According to him, these are journals on Egyptology and scientific documentation of the late XIX – early XX century. The Louvre representative emphasized that these are not unique exhibits.
“At this stage, we have no irreversible losses. The books will be dried, restored and returned to the shelves,” he added.
According to the newspaper, the incident occurred on November 26, when dirty water from the hydraulic heating and ventilation system got into the library.
According to preliminary data, the incident was caused by the mistaken opening of a valve, which led to a leakage of a worn pipe. The hydraulic network, which has been recognized as completely outdated, has been out of service for several months and is due to be replaced in 2026.
The museum is conducting an internal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
