A meeting between the delegations of Ukraine and the United States on the peaceful settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine has ended in Miami, Florida. The key goal of the talks was not only to end hostilities, but also to create conditions under which Ukraine will never be invaded again.
This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov after the talks, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Suspilne.
The US position
Marco Rubio called the session “a productive continuation of the negotiations in Geneva.” He emphasized that Washington’s task goes beyond simply ending the war.
“We want to help Ukraine become secure forever, so that it never faces another invasion… We want the Ukrainian people to come out of this war not just rebuilding their country, but making it stronger and more prosperous than it has ever been,” the Secretary of State said.
Rubio acknowledged that the process is “complex and delicate.” He also announced the next stage of diplomatic efforts – Special Representative Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow later this week. The Kremlin confirmed this meeting, but did not specify details.
In addition, according to Rubio, the United States maintains contact with the Russian side to varying degrees and has a “pretty good understanding of their views.”
“There are a lot of moving parts here, and obviously there’s another party involved that will have to be part of the equation,” Rubio added.
The US side of the talks was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Ukraine’s position
Rustem Umerov confirmed the success of the talks and thanked the US team for their work, mentioning the Secretary of State, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
“We have discussed all the important issues for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, and the United States has expressed its extraordinary support. Our goal is a prosperous and strong Ukraine,” he summarized.
Umerov later added that there is still a lot of work to be done – “we continue consultations and agree on further steps for peace for Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian delegation at the talks was much larger than the American one:
- Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and head of the delegation;
