Microsoft suffers a new outage: what we know

31 July 2024 06:52

Microsoft has apologised to users for another global outage this week. This time it concerned the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, which is responsible for computing in many of the company’s products, as well as the Microsoft 365 service. This was reported by the BBC, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

It is noted that the incident caused interruptions in the operation of a wide range of programmes, from Outlook email to the popular game Minecraft.

Monitoring resources also recorded problems with thousands of websites: from those serving the UK judicial system to the service for purchasing tickets to games of the Dutch football club Twente.

The outage lasted almost 10 hours and forced thousands of users to report problems with Microsoft services.

The company noted that the frontal outage, which affected Microsoft products including the Outlook email service and the Minecraft video game, has been resolved.

Preliminary investigation data shows that the outage was caused by a cyber attack and the inability to properly protect against it.

“While the initial initiating event was a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack… initial investigations indicate that an error in the implementation of our security controls exacerbated the impact of the attack rather than mitigating it,” the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform website said in an updated report.

As a reminder, on 19 July, a large-scale technical failure in Microsoft’s systems led to disruptions in the work of various organisations in many countries, including airports. Rail carriers, media, banks and other companies also faced technical problems.
