Members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be trained according to a new military standard. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The new standard was approved by an order of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. It is based on NATO standards and takes into account Ukraine’s national characteristics and combat experience gained during the repulsion of Russian aggression.
The training will consist of three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced, each with its own specific tasks and training methods.
The military will undergo specialized training in the following main areas:
- search and rescue
- survival
- avoiding capture;
- resilience in captivity;
- evacuation training;
- retraining.
The defenders will acquire practical survival skills in various environments, including Arctic, tropical, mountainous and desert areas. Special attention will be paid to the organization of search and rescue operations for the effective evacuation of isolated personnel.

“Preparing for survival in extreme conditions is an integral part of military training. The risk of being isolated or performing combat missions in difficult circumstances accompanies military service. Our goal is to provide soldiers with the necessary knowledge and train instructors to help them withstand the challenges. At the same time, the introduction of this standard brings us closer to NATO principles, which is an important step towards Euro-Atlantic integration,” said Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Dmytro Klimenkov.
The training will be conducted by SERE instructors who will undergo regular retraining.
What is SERE?
S. E. R. E. stands for: Survival. Evasion – evasion from the enemy. Resistant – resistance. Escape – escape from captivity.
This training program, as stated on the website of the public organization ALPHA SELF DEFENSE, was developed and implemented in the American and British armies in the 50s of the 20th century. Its purpose is to prepare air force pilots and special forces personnel for actions to ensure life support behind enemy lines.
Currently, this program is included in the training course and is included in the combat manuals of all the most developed NATO armies.

The program is divided into four main courses:
1. Survival. This course teaches methods of survival in different climatic and geographical conditions using standard and improvised means.
2. Evasion. The course teaches techniques of evading the enemy in enemy territory, methods of emergency evacuation and access to friendly forces.
3. Resistance. The course teaches methods of resistance when taken prisoner, techniques for countering interrogation and improving psychological training.
4. Escape. This course teaches methods of organizing an escape from captivity.
The S.E.R.E. program is by far the most comprehensive and streamlined survival training in the world. Thanks to the use of special algorithms in the learning process, the program is simple and accessible for quick learning.
