Ukrainian buckwheat is being withdrawn from sale in Moldova: what is its danger

30 September 14:36

The National Agency for Food Safety of Moldova (ANSA) has announced a recall of a batch of buckwheat groats produced in Ukraine. The reason for this is the excess of the permissible level of the pesticide glyphosate. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Moldovan media.

What products are being withdrawn

The recall includes MC Ora buckwheat weighing 0.9 kg, with production dates of July 24 and August 4, 2025.

The product was supplied to the Moldovan market by VITAFOR S.R.L.

Reason for the ban

According to the results of laboratory tests, ANSA experts found in buckwheat samples exceeding the permissible levels of glyphosate, a chemical used in agriculture as a herbicide.

In accordance with Moldovan and European standards, products with such indicators cannot be sold in the retail network and must be immediately withdrawn from circulation.

ANSA calls on citizens to refrain from consuming the cereal and return it to retail outlets by October 3 this year.

It should be noted that a month ago, the National Food Safety Agency of Moldova (ANSA) announced the recall of a batch of Russian buckwheat in 900 gram packages from the market. The decision was made due to the detection of high levels of Glyphosate pesticide residues in the product.

What consumers are advised

The regulator recommends that citizens who have already purchased this buckwheat return it to the store or destroy the product themselves. Consumption may pose a health risk.

What is the danger of glyphosate?

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. With prolonged or excessive exposure, it can have a toxic effect on the liver and kidneys, as well as increase the risk of developing cancer.

That’s why the EU and a number of other countries have strict control standards for residual levels of this substance in food.
