Naftogaz noted an increase in enemy attacks on the gas chain and gave an important explanation about this winter

Since the beginning of 2025, Russia has carried out at least 24 massive attacks on Ukraine’s gas infrastructure. This was reported by Naftogaz of Ukraine.
According to experts, the attacks are aimed not only at gas fields, but also at facilities where gas is processed, prepared for transportation, stored and supplied to consumers.
Naftogaz notes that Russian troops are deliberately attacking elements of the gas chain in an attempt to undermine Ukraine’s energy stability.
The shelling of the gas infrastructure began before the start of the heating season, which indicates the systematic nature of these actions. Is there enough reserve gas for critical facilities and boiler houses in the regions under fire? Why is it impossible to fully protect all gas infrastructure facilities from missiles and drones? Will Ukraine have enough gas if the attacks continue? [Kommersant] looked into it.
Despite the large-scale damage as of December 2025, the energy sector continues to restore the infrastructure and implement additional protection measures. Naftogaz of Ukraine assures that the situation remains under control, and Ukraine’s gas system demonstrates high resilience even in the face of constant attacks.
At the same time, the availability of sufficient gas volumes for the heating season remains one of the key challenges. The speed of restoration of damaged facilities, the level of infrastructure protection, and coordination between the government and energy companies are crucial.
Is there enough reserve fuel for critical facilities: Naftogaz’s response
NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine ensures a stable supply of natural gas for heat producers and budgetary institutions, in particular in the regions where shelling continues. This was stated by Sergiy Fedorenko, Commercial Director of Naftogaz Group, at the request of Kommersant Ukrainsky.
According to him, the company properly complies with the requirements of the current legislation, in particular the Regulation on the assignment of special obligations (PSO) to natural gas market participants.
“The company is fulfilling its obligation to provide Gas Supply Company Naftogaz Trading LLC with natural gas resources necessary, in particular, to supply natural gas to heat producers operating heat supply facilities, in particular, boiler houses,” said Fedorenko.
The company emphasizes that the fulfillment of special duties is a key element of the stable operation of the heat supply system, especially in the context of military risks and damage to infrastructure as a result of Russian shelling.
Thus, Naftogaz assures that the resource base for critical heating facilities is formed in accordance with the requirements of the state and allows to maintain the operation of boiler houses even in difficult security conditions.
Why is it impossible to fully protect all critical infrastructure facilities?
Protecting hundreds of critical infrastructure facilities from Russian attacks is an extremely difficult task, especially given the enemy’s growing technological capabilities. This was stated by the Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine Sergiy Koretsky, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine.
According to him, the threat level differs significantly depending on the type of weapons used by Russia.
“Protection against drones is one task. Defense against cruise missiles is another. And countering ballistic missiles is a super task,” Koretsky said.
The CEO stressed that Naftogaz Group, like other energy companies, is implementing passive physical protection systems to minimize the consequences of attacks. At the same time, he acknowledged that it is often impossible to fully protect facilities from missile attacks, which leads to destruction.
Koretsky paid special attention to the evolution of drone attacks. According to him, Russian Shahed drones have become more numerous, faster, and more dangerous.
“The flight path has changed, the speed has increased, and the weight of the warhead has at least doubled,” he explained.
Naftogaz emphasizes that these factors create new challenges for the energy sector and require constant updating of approaches to protecting and countering threats.
