NATO predicts the beginning of the “dark” phase of the war for Ukraine

The presence of DPRK troops in Europe is a turning point that could mark the beginning of a much darker phase of the war in Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in his article for Politico, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Last week, a delegation of South Korean intelligence and defense leaders informed 32 NATO members and our partners in the Indo-Pacific region about the deployment of thousands of North Korean troops in the Kursk region of Russia to take part in a hostile war against Ukraine.

“This historic appearance of North Korean troops on European soil has serious consequences. For the first time in a century, Russia has invited foreign troops to its territory. This shows the threat we face. Are we not on the threshold of something much worse than anything Ukraine has already experienced?” – rutte wrote.

He emphasized that the continuation of the Russian war against Ukraine leads to even greater losses for Russia. According to estimates, Russia loses 1,200 soldiers every day, and since February 2022, more than 600,000 people have been killed. The war is also costing Russians dearly and provoking a general increase in tensions in the country. Nevertheless, Putin continues to fuel the war, relying on his allies such as China, Iran, and North Korea.

Rutte also writes that the involvement of North Korean troops in the conflict (the war in Ukraine – ed.) leads to increased tensions and has a negative impact on global security. It is important for China, which supports both Russia and North Korea, to realize its responsibility and make efforts to stop the aggression.

“Ukraine has received significant support from NATO member states and Indo-Pacific partners. But this support must continue, because this conflict has profound consequences for the whole world. We need to do more to change the course of the war and reduce the price that Ukraine and the world pay for peace,” the NATO Secretary General said.

In addition, he suggested that Ukraine should also develop cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners, including in the field of intelligence and production of defense technology. This will help reduce the influence of aggressive states such as Russia and North Korea on global security.

“Supporting the Ukrainian people is an investment in peace and security for the entire international community. We cannot afford not to pay this price. We need political commitment and a network of defense partnerships to ensure that we are on the path to defeating aggression,” Rutte summarized.
