Farmers’ protests over imports from Ukraine and the deal with Mercosur erupt again in Poland
15 November 07:21
On Friday, a new wave of nationwide farmers’ protests started in Poland. The farmers are opposed to the EU’s agricultural policy and, in particular, imports from Ukraine. This was reported by Business Insider, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
Where the actions are taking place
Pickets and tractor convoys are planned in about 50 settlements, mainly in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
The organizers emphasize that this time they do not plan to block the roads, but the actions will be massive and long-lasting.
What are the farmers’ demands?
According to the protesters, the situation in the Polish agricultural sector is deteriorating.
Farmers are demanding urgent negotiations with the Minister of Agriculture and changes in state and European policy.
The main complaints include:
- increased imports of agricultural products from Ukraine;
- terms of trade within the EU;
- the EU’s agreement with the Mercosur trade bloc, which provides for the supply of grain, meat and other products from South America.
According to the organizers, the protest will last at least a month, and its format may change depending on the situation.
What is Mercosur and why are farmers against it?
Mercosur is a free trade zone that includes most South American countries.
Polish farmers fear that the ratification of the EU-Mercosur agreement will lead to a significant increase in imports of cheap agricultural products.
This, in their opinion, will create an oversupply of goods on the market and can significantly reduce purchase prices for local producers.
