Chlorine and hydrochloric acid levels in the air of Ternopil: recommendations for residents

As a result of yesterday’s Russian strike on a Ternopil industrial facility, a fire broke out there, releasing harmful substances into the atmosphere. Today, the city is still recording exceedances of the permissible limits of harmful substances in the air. This was reported by the Ternopil Regional Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

“As of 12.30, 21.08.2024, according to the results of calculations, the MPC of chlorine and hydrochloric acid in the air in the territory of Ternopil is still exceeded,”

– the report says.

Results of air quality measurements in different districts of Ternopil and around the city:

  • м. Ternopil, Novyi Svit, Naberezhna Street. Novyi Svit, Naberezhna Street, hydrochloric acid – 0.52 mg/m3, while the norm is 0.2 mg/m3;
  • м. Ternopil, Novyi Svit, ul. Novyi Svit, Kotlyarevskoho Street, chlorine was 0.39 mg/m3, with the norm being 0.1 mg/m3; hydrochloric acid – 0.23 mg/m3, with the norm being 0.2 mg/m3
  • м. Ternopil, Brodivska Street, chlorine was 0.22 mg/m3, with the norm being 0.1 mg/m3; hydrochloric acid was 0.19 mg/m3, with the norm being 0.2 mg/m3;
  • м. Ternopil, Biletska Street, 1, chlorine was 0.6 mg/m3, with a standard of 0.1 mg/m3; hydrochloric acid was 0.52 mg/m3, with a standard of 0.2 mg/m3;
  • с. Pidhorodne, chlorine was 0.04 mg/m3, while the norm was 0.1 mg/m3; hydrochloric acid was 0.14 mg/m3, while the norm was 0.2 mg/m3;
  • м. Ternopil, 20 Obyizna St., chlorine was 0.3 mg/m3, with the standard being 0.1 mg/m3; hydrochloric acid was 0.21 mg/m3, with the standard being 0.2 mg/m3;
  • ternopil, mn. Kutkivtsi, chlorine was 0.16, with the norm being 0.1 mg/m3;
  • ternopil, Pronyatyn, chlorine was 0.19 mg/m3 with a standard of 0.1 mg/m3, hydrochloric acid was 0.22 mg/m3 with a standard of 0.2 mg/m3;
  • с. Petrykiv village, chlorine was 0.09 with the norm of 0.1 mg/m3, hydrochloric acid – 0.14 mg/m3 with the norm of 0.2 mg/m3;
  • ternopil, intersection of Halytska, Brodivska, Zbarazka streets, chlorine was 0.37 with the norm of 0.1 mg/m3, hydrochloric acid was 0.27 mg/m3 with the norm of 0.2 mg/m3;
  • ternopil, mn. Centre, , chlorine was 0.23, while the norm is 0.1 mg/m3.

What to do

In order to protect themselves from the negative effects of air pollution, city residents are advised to take the following actions

  • stay indoors during the day unless necessary
  • limit children’s time outside as much as possible;
  • close windows in the premises;
  • thoroughly wash food brought from the yard.
