Pro-Russian presidential candidate Georgescu detained in Romania
26 February 19:13Romanian police detained pro-Russian ex-presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, he was taken for questioning to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

It all started with the morning 47 searches in the homes of associates of Georgescu. Among the charges brought against him are the creation of a fascist group, as well as making false statements about campaign financing.
During the searches, law enforcers found weapons, ammunition and considerable money. In particular, one of Georgescu’s guards at home was found 900 thousand euros in a safe hidden under the floor.
The politician himself criticized these actions of law enforcers, calling it an attempt to “justify election fraud” and block his re-run for the presidency.
His team later reported that Georgescu was on his way to file his candidacy for the elections. However, he was stopped in traffic and taken to the Prosecutor General’s Office for questioning.
The politician’s security guard was also detained and taken for questioning.
Subsequently, people gathered in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office chanting Calin Georgescu’s name. Law enforcers placed fences near the building to avoid any incidents.
The second cadence of Klaus Iohannis as president ended on December 21, 2024, but the country did not elect a new head of state.
on December 6, the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to annul the results of the first round of presidential elections. They were won by independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who promised to cut off aid to Ukraine, ban the transit of Ukrainian grain, and later speculated about the division of Ukraine.
Before the second round, Iohannis allowed the release of Romanian intelligence documents on the election, which, among other things, showed that Georgescu had campaigned in violation of the law.
Therefore, the Romanian president said he would remain in office until his successor is elected. The opposition in Romania filed a request for Iohannis’ removal. on February 10, the president announced his resignation, explaining it by the desire to avoid internal and external crisis that could cause his ouster.
Thus, the President of the Senate Ilie Bolojan became the interim president. Tentatively, new elections will be held in the spring of 2025.
