Federal agents shoot and kill a man for the second time in a month in the US: what Trump has to say
25 January 04:20
Three weeks after the controversial killing of a woman in Minneapolis by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, another person was shot dead in the same city. During a deportation operation in Minneapolis on Saturday, January 24, a federal police officer fired “defensive shots” at a man who approached police officers with a gun, the US Department of Homeland Security said.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to CNN and a post by US President Donald Trump.
After border patrol officers tried to disarm him, he “resisted with force” and a border patrol officer opened fire, fearing “for his life and the lives and safety of other officers,” the statement said. The agency also published a photo showing what appears to be a 9mm semi-automatic pistol belonging to the man.
The incident occurred when border guards attempted to detain a migrant without a valid residence permit.
Minnesota governor demands federal officers be removed from the state
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the shooting by federal officers. “This is disgusting,” he wrote on Twitter, demanding that US President Donald Trump stop using federal police to deport foreign nationals.
“Remove thousands of violent, untrained police officers from Minnesota. Immediately,” he urged.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the deceased was a 37-year-old local resident, likely a U.S. citizen. After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered at the scene, shouting insults at federal officers and demanding that they leave the city.
Protests in Minnesota after the killing of a woman
On January 7, an ICE immigration agent shot and killed US citizen Rene Nicole Good during a raid in Minneapolis. City and state authorities spoke out against the actions of the immigration police. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, demanded that ICE agents “get out of town,” saying their actions posed a threat to residents’ safety.
Governor Walz said that using the judicial system against political opponents is an authoritarian practice. According to him, the only person who has not been investigated in connection with Renee Good’s death is the federal agent who used a weapon against her.
Since the incident, there have been daily protests in the city against the actions of ICE officers. In turn, the US Department of Justice has launched an investigation into Frey and Walz, who are suspected of conspiring to obstruct the activities of immigration police. In mid-January, another incident involving ICE occurred in Minneapolis: an officer wounded a migrant from Venezuela.
Trump’s response to the incident
In response, Trump posted a photo of the shooter’s weapon with two extra magazines, emphasizing that the officers had to defend themselves without the support of the local police.
Trump blames local authorities for withdrawing police forces and inaction, which, in his opinion, forced ICE to act on its own.
He also raised the issue of financial fraud and illegal immigration, stating that many immigrant criminals had been detained and removed from the state.
Trump stressed that the situation could have been much worse if ICE had not intervened in time, and called on the authorities to allow officers to perform their duties without political pressure.
