US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that the Biden administration’s decision to send anti-personnel mines to Ukraine for the first time was motivated by Russia’s changing tactics on the front line. This is reported by CNN, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs.

“Since the Russians have been so unsuccessful in their fight, they have changed their tactics somewhat. They are no longer attacking with their mechanized forces, but are conducting offensives with infantry that can approach and pave the way for mechanized forces,” Austin told reporters.

Earlier, CNN reported that the United States intends to provide Kyiv with anti-personnel mines for use in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops have been advancing slowly and steadily.

According to Austin, the Ukrainian army needs “things that can help slow down those efforts.”

The US Secretary of Defense also emphasized that Ukraine should be responsible and “record where they are putting these mines.”

According to CNN, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also told reporters about the White House’s intention to announce a support package for Ukraine worth up to $275 million.

“Later today, the White House will announce up to $275 million in additional security assistance for Ukraine to meet critical needs on the battlefield,” Austin said on Wednesday.

According to him, the package will include ammunition for missile systems, artillery and anti-tank weapons.
