US President Donald Trump has taken the unusual step of instructing the country’s military leadership to participate in negotiations on Iran and the settlement of the war in Ukraine.
This was reported by the Associated Press (AP), according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The article notes that Trump sent the US commander in the Middle East, Admiral Brad Cooper, to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, and also appointed Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as the “key negotiator” on ending the war in Ukraine.
“With special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner balancing two difficult negotiations, the decision to bring in military leaders — whether for their experience, connections, or to show potentially tougher options — reflects how the Republican administration has turned the traditional model upside down.
According to the authors, Trump’s actions show a departure from traditional diplomacy and point to the military playing a bigger role in resolving international conflicts.
Contact with Russia and NATO
In Abu Dhabi, General Alexus Grinkevich, commander of US and NATO forces in Europe, joined the talks.
According to the US military, his participation is aimed at restoring high-level military contact with Russia, ensuring ongoing dialogue for the possible achievement of lasting peace.
This approach demonstrates a departure from traditional diplomacy and an increase in the role of the military in resolving international conflicts.
Recall that US President Donald Trump proposed replacing the current Treaty on the Reduction of Offensive Arms (START-3) with a new agreement between Russia and the United States.
It should be noted that Trump’s administration has stated that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war, as well as on the resumption of direct military dialogue between the US and Russia with the aim of finding ways to end the conflict.
