Trump suspends work on peace plan for Ukraine: what’s the reason?

11 February 2025 05:51

The administration of US President Donald Trump has suspended the development of its peace plan for Ukraine. This was done to involve the European Union in the negotiations. This was reported by The Telegraph, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to journalists, Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg said that European states would have a seat at the table and promised to hold individual talks with NATO allies before finalizing the “peace plan.”

Kellogg noted that in his talks with European diplomats, he would seek their views on the form of any peace agreement and what governments could contribute to the process.

According to Kellogg, he wants to hold such talks with the prime ministers and presidents of NATO member states. This should reassure those states that fear that Washington will “push” them out of the negotiations.

Contrary to the public statement that Donald Trump should personally present the document, General Kellogg allegedly intends to reveal certain provisions during the Munich Security Conference, which will take place this weekend.

“At the same time, General Kellogg said that he will make public elements of the peace plan at the Munich Security Conference in Germany this weekend. We understand that this will be a proposal to continue military support for Kyiv in exchange for access to Ukraine’s rare earth resources,” the newspaper notes.

European partners have received assurances that the US is going to strengthen Ukraine’s position in any future negotiations.

According to CNN, the US President’s Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, will arrive in Ukraine. His visit is scheduled for February 20.

Trump’s position on Ukraine

During the election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly said that he would stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. Sometimes he suggested that this could happen even before that.

Also during the election, the media spread the so-called “Trump Plan”. The idea was that the United States would use its influence to stop the war and maintain the status quo. To do this, Trump would force Putin and Zelenskyy to sit down at the negotiating table. If Putin does not agree to negotiate, the United States will give Ukraine all the weapons it needs to win on the battlefield. If Zelenskyy refuses to negotiate, the United States will completely stop helping Ukraine.

This plan, in its various variations, stipulates that Russia retains the territories it temporarily occupies and that Ukraine does not join NATO.

However, later Trump seemed to “forget” about this plan. In particular, he voiced scenarios in which he would force Russia to capitulate due to the decline in world oil prices.

After Trump was elected President of the United States, one of his advisors, Brian Lanza, said that Ukraine should forget about Crimea. The president-elect’s entourage, however, was quick to deny this statement and said that Lanza could not speak for Trump.

Currently, the future US Special Representative for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is talking about 100 days in which he wants to reach some kind of agreement.
