On the night of 15-16 July, an “emergency situation” occurred at the South Ukrainian NPP, which led to a temporary shutdown of the reactors for almost 12 hours. The reason was a malfunction of two transformers. This was reported by NV.ua, citing sources in the Verkhovna Rada and the energy industry, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

Sources in parliament and the energy sector confirmed the malfunction and its consequences. One of the representatives of the Servant of the People party leadership explained the situation as follows:

“Yes, indeed, the transformers were out of order. They burned down. This had a further effect, and a 1,000 MW unit was shut down. It was returned to the grid in a day. The main reason was an abnormal heat wave.”

An energy industry source provided more details, saying that oil tanks in two high-voltage transformers exploded at the plant’s substation due to overheating caused by the heat wave. The source also noted the promptness of Energoatom employees in eliminating the consequences of the accident during the day.

The same source assessed the scale of the accident at three to four points out of ten and described it as a “technical and ordinary situation”.

The publication also contacted the Centre for Strategic Communications, which explained that it had previously denied the situation, relying on information from Energoatom and Energy Minister Galushchenko.

Last night, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine once again called the information about the “accident at the South Ukrainian NPP” a fake.

on 23 July, Russia launched rumours about an alleged accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that caused a massive radiation release. on 16 July, it spread information about an alleged accident at the South Ukrainian NPP, which resulted in the burning of transformers and a deterioration in the power supply situation.
