A dry port has been launched in Vinnytsia: what it is

9 September 2024 15:22

“The Vinnytsia Container Terminal, a so-called dry port built by LEMTRANS Group, has received its first cargo today. This was announced by Vinnytsia Mayor Serhiy Morgunov, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

Vinnytsia believes that the open logistics centre will become an alternative to the ports of Odesa.

“This format of the logistics centre will be an alternative complement to the ports of greater Odesa, where cargo owners will be able to receive a range of services,”

– morgunov said.

According to the official, the terminal will provide fast delivery, handling and shipment of cargo to various destinations. The terminal has the appropriate railway infrastructure, container yard, warehouses and a weighing system.

“In fact, such container transportations will expand the horizons of cooperation of our community not only with other regions, but also with European countries. Shippers will be able to regularly ship containers to the terminals of the greater Odesa area and Poland, and in the future – by rail to Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands,”

– added the mayor of Vinnytsia.

Earlier it was reported that USD 15 million was invested in the construction of the terminal. LEMTRANS Group is part of Rinat Akhmetov’s System Capital Management investment group.

Dry port

Dry ports or inland ports are inland intermodal terminals directly connected to seaports by road or rail. They function as centres for transshipment of maritime cargo to inland destinations.

In addition to transshipment, dry ports may also include warehousing and consolidation facilities, services for land freight carriers, and customs clearance. Locating these facilities in a dry port reduces the burden on ports near the sea in terms of storage and customs space.

Dry ports can improve the efficiency of cargo movement between ships and major land transport networks by creating a more centralised distribution point. Inland ports can improve the flow of imports and exports by moving labour-intensive container sorting and handling inland, away from congested seaports.
