Dangerous bacteria found in Ukrainian water bodies: where water does not meet standards

28 July 19:20

Several rivers and lakes in Ukraine have exceeded sanitary standards, with bacteria that can cause acute intestinal infections found in the water. This was reported by regional and city centers for disease control and prevention.

According to the Dnipropetrovs’k regional center, pathogens of intestinal infections were found in the following rivers:

  • Tomakivka (on the shore of the Mykolaiv Reservoir),
  • Dnipro (within Prydniprovskyi Park),
  • Kilchen (the city of Pidhorodne),
  • Samara (children’s beach on Palanochna Street in Dnipro).

The water also does not meet sanitary standards in these places:

  • Ingulets and Saksahan (Kryvyi Rih),
  • the beach on Monastyrskyi Island (Dnipro),
  • Vovcha (Pavlohrad),
  • Oril (Chernechchyna village, Magdalynivka district).

Kyiv’s chief sanitary doctor, Serhiy Chumak, told "Komersant Ukrainian" that the situation in the capital is also worrying.

As of July 24 , water samples on the Dnipro River did not meet the standards on the beaches:

  • Galerny,
  • Chortoryi,
  • Troyeschyna, and
  • Venice,
  • Suburban Slobodka.

In these locations, the levels of lactose-positive E. coli, an indicator of bacterial contamination, are exceeded, as well as the level of biological oxygen consumption, which indicates organic pollution.

In addition, the water in the lakes does not meet sanitary standards:

  • Verbne,
  • Puscha, and Verbne.

The city center has sent relevant notifications to the balance holders of the beaches (Pleso Municipal Enterprise) and recommends that citizens refrain from swimming in the above-mentioned water bodies until the water quality improves.
