On Tuesday, 12 March, the European Parliament will hold a debate on the need to impose sanctions on imports of Russian and Belarusian food and agricultural products to the EU.
The events are scheduled in the official schedule of the Parliament’s work, Kommersant Ukrainian reports ![]()
The initiative to consider the issue was taken by Polish MP from the European People’s Party Andrzej Galicki. He noted that such sanctions are part of the solution to the problem of European farmers who are currently protesting in many EU countries.
“There are many factors in this situation, but one can be quickly eliminated by imposing an embargo on food from Russia and Belarus. Two years after the start of the war, food products are still coming from these two regimes to the European market. This is economically unjustified and morally unacceptable,”
– said the MEP.
The decision to ban Belarusian-Russian imports requires the consent of all EU countries.
Russian agricultural products are not subject to EU sanctions, as they are considered to be an important element of global food security, particularly for Asian and African countries. However, following the escalation of the situation on the Ukrainian-Polish border, more and more countries are calling on the EU to refuse Russian products. In particular, in addition to Ukraine, such statements have already been made in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
