Russia strikes Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and Dnipro: residential buildings and the entire energy sector were attacked

20 January 09:38

On the night of January 20, Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Kyiv and a number of other Ukrainian cities, including Rivne, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and many other important energy centers. Throughout the night, the Russians fired ballistic missiles and Shahed drones, and in the early morning, they attacked with cruise missiles from Tu-95MS bombers. This was reported by monitoring channels and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Sirens sounded across almost the entire country, except for the western regions of Volyn, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Zakarpattia.

Explosions were heard in several Ukrainian cities:

  • Kryvyi Rih
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Bohodukhiv (Kharkiv region)
  • Dnipro
  • Bakhmach (Chernihiv region)
  • Kyiv
  • Brovary (Kyiv region)
  • Merefa (Kharkiv region)
  • Kremenchuk (Poltava region).

According to the monitoring channel monitor, the Russian army used drones, including jet drones, to strike Kyiv and the surrounding region, Rivne, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and individual areas of settlements belonging to these regions. Dnipro was particularly affected by the drones.

The occupiers also launched about six ballistic missiles in the direction of Kyiv from Bryansk, two at Dnipro from Taganrog, and two at the Vinnytsia region from Crimea.

“The last case stands out in particular — I don’t remember any cases of ballistic missiles being launched at Vinnytsia from Crimea. We are waiting for the results of the investigation. Whether it was an Iskander-I, a KN-23, or perhaps a Zircon, will be determined. One thing is clear: the residents of Vinnytsia should respond to the threat of ballistic missiles when an air raid alert is declared,” the statement said.

In the early morning, the occupiers launched X-101 cruise missiles in the direction of Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

“In general, the enemy continues to attack the power grid, adhering to the tactic of targeted strikes on individual objects. I cannot call today’s attack massive, which does not make it easier for the defense forces to repel it,” the channel added.

Monitoring channels indicated that the Russians were attacking the main thermal power plants in Kyiv, near Kyiv, and in Dnipro, as well as a number of hydroelectric power plants and other important facilities in the center of the country.

According to the Radar air defense service, Russia attacked about 14 energy facilities, with the greatest impact in Kyiv. According to their observations, the strike was exclusively on energy infrastructure, with transformer substations, thermal power plants, and thermal power stations being attacked. The main targets of the strike were Kyiv, Dnipro, Chornomorsk, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions and frontline territories, as well as several shahids that attacked Rivne and Kaniv. Ballistic strikes hit Kyiv and Vinnytsia.

Attack on Kyiv

On Tuesday, January 20, Kyiv was again subjected to an enemy attack, which led to serious disruptions in the operation of utility networks. The energy infrastructure and life support systems of residents on the left bank were most affected. This was reported by the Kyiv Police and Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Klitschko noted that one victim in the Dnipro district as a result of the enemy attack is in the hospital in one of the capital’s hospitals.

As a result of the latest shelling, 5,635 high-rise buildings were left without heat.

Eighty percent of these buildings are facilities where heat had just been restored after the previous massive attack on January 9.

For comparison, as of yesterday evening, only 16 buildings in the city remained without heat as a result of previous damage.

Due to the morning strike, the left bank of the capital is currently completely without water supply. Specialists are trying to stabilize the system in order to restore water to the apartments of Kyiv residents.

“Utility and energy workers are working to restore heat, water, and electricity to the homes of Kyiv residents,” the mayor emphasized.

The extent of damage to critical infrastructure is currently being assessed.

Attack on the Kyiv region

Russian troops attacked the Kyiv region on the night of January 20; a 50-year-old man was killed and gas stations were damaged, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, on Telegram.

“Tonight, the enemy again launched a treacherous attack on the Kyiv region. As a result of a massive attack in the Bucha district, a 50-year-old man was fatally wounded,” the official said.

Doctors fought for his life, but they were unable to save him — he died at the scene.

As a result of the night attack on the Kyiv region, two gas stations were damaged.

“The air raid alert continues. I ask the residents of the region not to ignore the danger signals, to stay in safe places, and to protect themselves and their loved ones,” added the head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration.

Attack on Dnipro

On the night of Tuesday, January 20, the Russian army attacked Dnipro. The alarm in the city lasted more than ten hours — from 9:19 p.m., according to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Hanzha.

According to the official, the Russian attack caused a fire. A factory and a high-rise building were damaged, as well as at least five cars.

The head of the Regional Military Administration emphasized that two women, aged 76 and 67, were injured. Both are receiving outpatient treatment.

It should be noted that air defense forces shot down 40 drones in the Dnipropetrovsk region last night.

Nighttime Russian attack: critical infrastructure facility damaged in Vinnytsia region

The head of the Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration, Natalia Zabolotna, reported on the strike in Vinnytsia region.

According to her, as a result of the night attack, a hit was recorded on one of the critical infrastructure facilities.

All necessary services are working at the scene to eliminate the consequences of the shelling.
