Hungary will block the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia, says Orbán

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated that Hungary will block the European Union’s adoption of a new package of sanctions against Russia.

“We will not stand aside while the Druzhba oil pipeline is closed. We will ensure fuel supplies to Hungary and take the necessary countermeasures to restore supplies. Countermeasures: refusal to supply diesel fuel from Hungary to Ukraine; refusal to provide any military loans to Ukraine; refusal to support sanctions – the 20th package of sanctions will be rejected,” Orbán wrote on social media.

As reported, the European Union plans to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia on February 23.

What is known about the 20th package of sanctions

On February 6, the European Commission presented a draft of the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which is planned to be approved by February 24, the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion.

The main blow is aimed at the energy and financial systems: it is proposed to introduce a total ban on maritime services for Russian oil, expand the sanctions list of the “shadow fleet” to 640 vessels, and block tanker services.

It should be noted that several EU countries are seeking to weaken the anniversary package of sanctions against the aggressor. This refers to the European Commission’s proposals for restrictions against foreign ports and banks that help Russia sell oil illegally.
