Ukraine continues to prepare the energy sector for the fourth military winter. Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk assured that 17.6 GW of capacity will be ready for the start of the heating season, and that the stocks of resources and equipment reserves are being formed according to plan, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Meeting of the Anti-Crisis Energy Headquarters
- Held in Zaporizhzhia under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
- Participants: Vice Prime Minister for Recovery Oleksiy Kuleba, members of the Verkhovna Rada, representatives of energy companies, the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the State Special Communications Service.
- The main issue: implementation of the Action Plan to prepare the housing and utilities and energy sectors for the autumn-winter period 2025/2026.
Preparation of the power system
- Repair and restoration: power facilities are undergoing scheduled and emergency repairs.
- Reserves and stocks: energy resources are accumulated and equipment reserves are formed.
- Emergency drills: training of personnel to respond quickly to emergencies.
- Distributed generation: 194 MW of capacity has been commissioned, and more than 380 MW is planned by the end of the year.
- Critical infrastructure protection: energy companies are stepping up security at their facilities, while the military is strengthening its defense in the sky.
International support
Ukraine attracts assistance from:
- Energy Support Fund
- UNDP
- EBRD
- JICA
- World Bank
This helps to increase the reliability and security of energy supply even in the event of shelling and cyber threats.
Prospects and technologies
- A complex of energy storage systems in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovska oblasts has been launched, capable of supplying electricity to 600 thousand homes within 2 hours.
- The planned commissioning of additional distributed generation capacities continues.
As a reminder, Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was subject to numerous attacks by Russia in 2022-2025.
Distributed generation and energy storage systems have become critical to maintaining a stable energy supply.
More than 15 GW of capacity has already been commissioned for the 2024/2025 heating season, which allowed us to survive the winter with minimal interruptions.
This year’s preparations are on schedule and even ahead of schedule, which demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to adapt the power system to military challenges using both domestic resources and international support.
