Ukraine prepares for negotiations next week: signal from the US expected

1 February 02:04

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is counting on further negotiations next week and is waiting for specifics from the United States.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the head of state’s evening video address.

He said that NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov reported throughout the day on January 31. In particular, Ukraine is in constant communication with the American side and is awaiting details on further negotiations.

“We expect specifics from them regarding further meetings. Ukraine is ready to work in all working formats. It is important that there are results and that there are meetings. We are counting on meetings next week, we are preparing for them,” Zelensky said.

Negotiations in Abu Dhabi and the need for a personal meeting with Putin

Last week, on January 23 and 24, the first trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia took place in the UAE. The United States assessed the meeting positively, and Kyiv called it meaningful.

Before the talks, Zelensky said that the key issue would be the territorial question, primarily Donbas.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had asked Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for an energy truce and not to attack Ukraine for a week.

Later, Zelensky confirmed that the issue of an energy truce was discussed at the talks in Abu Dhabi, which, incidentally, has indeed been observed for the last few days.

It was also announced that the second round of talks is scheduled for today, February 1. According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s special representatives will not be present, which means that Ukraine and Russia will hold a bilateral meeting.

At the same time, Volodymyr Zelensky warned that it may be postponed due to the situation around Iran, as the US may strike the Ayatollah regime, which in turn will affect the date.
