Ukraine and the United States held a new round of talks in Miami: what is known

5 December 08:59

Negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations have ended in Miami. This was reported by Suspilne, citing sources in the Ukrainian delegation, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Who participated in the meeting

The Ukrainian side was represented by:

  • Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council;
  • Andriy Hnatov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The American delegation is not detailed, but it is known that this is a high level of contacts that the United States maintains in parallel with other diplomatic channels.

How the negotiations went

This meeting was a second one, as the delegations had previously met in Miami on November 30. This was followed by a meeting between Putin and U.S. Special Representative Steve Vitkoff (with the participation of Jared Kushner) in Moscow on December 2. After this nearly five-hour conversation, Putin’s aide Ushakov said that the parties had not yet “reached a compromise” on the war in Ukraine.

US-Ukraine talks in this format began in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23 and continued in Miami on November 30. Following the previous talks, Umerov said that the delegation was working under clear directives from the Ukrainian president: to protect the interests of the state, to have a substantive dialogue and to promote the decisions developed during the meetings.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio then called the meeting “a productive continuation of the talks in Geneva,” emphasizing that Washington’s task goes beyond simply ending the war.

The day before, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced “good news” about the war in Ukraine: It will be within a few weeks.
