Ukraine wanted to exchange transit to Transnistria for ZNPP – former Moldovan Prime Minister

During the unfolding of the energy crisis in Transnistria in early 2025, Ukraine was ready to provide gas transit there in exchange for certain concessions from Russia. Former Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Sturza said this in an interview with nokta, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
on January 1, 2025, the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic found itself in an energy crisis. However, Ukraine was ready, according to the Moldovan politician, to help the unrecognized PMR in exchange for concessions from Russia.
“Ukrainians, of course, wanted to take advantage of the situation to get some benefits. Here, by the way, [they had] not some exorbitant demands – not to bomb the energy sector and to get access, as far as I know, to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. To get access to generating capacities,”
– said the former Moldovan prime minister.
However, the citizens of Transnistria, whom Russia protects in words, turned out to be completely unnecessary for Russia in practice.
“No one expected Russia to be so cynical towards its own citizens, as it calls them, in Transnistria. Leaving them without heat and electricity in the middle of winter,”
– sturza added.

Energy crisis in Transnistria
After Ukraine stopped transit of Russian gas through its territory on January 1, 2025, the pro-Russian unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic found itself in an energy crisis. The PMR turned out to be critically dependent on Russian gas and unprepared for such a step by Ukraine. Most household subscribers were disconnected from gas. The territory immediately stopped supplying heat to homes and began selling firewood.
The Moldovan hydroelectric power plant, which supplies electricity to Moldova and Transnistria, switched to coal, which will be enough to provide electricity until about the end of February. Moldova claims that the country’s energy security is not in danger. In particular, the state is able to import electricity from Romania and Ukraine. However, Transnistria has no such options.
An economic emergency has been declared in the unrecognized republic, and almost all industrial enterprises have stopped working there. As the temperature drops, the problems will only get worse.
At the same time, according to energy expert Mykhailo Honchar, “Russia can provide Transnistria with gas, but it does not do so.”
