Ukrainian dairy farmers have the potential to increase organic milk production. This was stated by Olena Zhupinas, Deputy Director General of the Association of Milk Producers, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The European strategy stipulates that 25% of agricultural products should be organic. We have 2% so far, so the potential is great,” Zhupinas said.

She also emphasized the importance of modernizing farms, adapting to European standards, and supporting the Association of Milk Producers, which provides advice, helps with legislative issues, etc.

It is worth reminding that in Ukraine, the area under organic production exceeds 460 thousand hectares, but the share of organic milk in total production is less than 1%.

Demand for organic products

The global organic milk market is growing steadily: The EU, the US and Asian countries are showing increased demand, especially in the baby food and premium products segment.

Export potential

Ukraine is already exporting organic grains and oilseeds, which opens the way for export expansion in the livestock sector. Organic milk could become a new competitive product on the EU market.

Challenges for farmers

Switching to organic milk production requires significant investments, certification, changes in the feed base, and strict adherence to standards. This is often a barrier for small and medium-sized producers.

Domestic demand

Ukrainian consumers are gradually discovering organic products. According to specialized associations, organic sales in the domestic market are growing by 10-15% annually, although they remain below European levels.
