Ukraine is on the verge of a humanitarian energy crisis due to Russia’s massive attacks on civilian infrastructure. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a letter to parliamentary factions, which was seen by Reuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to Merz, Russian President Vladimir Putin is not seeking a ceasefire, but, on the contrary, has authorized the largest-scale strikes on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.
The German chancellor directly accused the Russian leadership of war crimes and emphasized that the war can only end if the United States and Europe provide real security guarantees for Ukraine.
Large-scale destruction of Kharkiv’s power system
On the same day, Russian troops launched a missile attack on Kharkiv. According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, the energy infrastructure of Ukraine’s second largest city suffered “very serious damage.”
Russia has been waging a large-scale campaign of attacks on Ukraine’s energy system this winter, increasing the risk of power outages and humanitarian problems.
Personnel decisions and international support
Zelenskyy also appointed Chrystia Freeland, a former Canadian deputy prime minister, as an economic adviser to the president of Ukraine. He explained this by citing her experience in attracting investment and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s internal resilience, both for post-war reconstruction and for long-term defense in the event of a prolonged war.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he would be traveling to Paris for a meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” to discuss further support for Ukraine.
Drones over Russia and Trump’s statement
In the United States, President Donald Trump publicly questioned Russia’s claims of an alleged Ukrainian attack on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. According to him, “nothing of the sort happened,” and Moscow’s reports are not true.
At the same time, Russian authorities claim that since the beginning of the year, Moscow has been under attack by drones almost daily. In just a few days, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, 57 drones were shot down over the Moscow region, causing the capital’s airports to repeatedly suspend operations.
In addition, in the city of Yelets, Lipetsk region, a drone caused a fire in an industrial area. The Energia plant, which is an important supplier to the Russian defense industry, is located there. Ukraine has previously confirmed strikes on this facility.
