President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has assessed that the process of exhuming the bodies of victims of the Volyn tragedy has begun “not only in words and not only in declarations.”
The head of state said this in an interview with the Polish edition of PAP, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“I believe that Ukraine does not and will not block the relevant process of search and exhumation in Volyn. The fact that representatives of memory institutes meet – on our part, it was the leadership of the institute – I believe that all steps are being taken in this direction,” he emphasized.
According to him, Poland and Ukraine should move towards each other in historical issues.
“I believe that such synchronization is correct and we must respect each other,” he said. In his opinion, both countries have much more in common, including “tragic moments in our common history.”
“All tragic moments should not be forgotten. We must help each other, and we will help each other,” he emphasized.
According to him, given the war in Ukraine, Poles and Ukrainians have been helping each other for four years.
“We did not allow the Russians to occupy Ukraine, approach the border with Poland and become a threat to Poland’s independence,” he emphasized.
The Volyn tragedy
During the Second World War, under German occupation, several partisan groups operated on the territory of Ukraine. Among them were the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Polish Home Army. They mainly fought in Volyn.
In 1943-1944, ethnic cleansing of Ukrainians and Poles took place, which was called the Volyn tragedy. The names of about 30,000 Polish and about 10,000 Ukrainian victims have been identified.
