on June 26, 2025, during a meeting of international donors in London, it became known that Ukraine would receive 42.5 million euros to repair and restore the NSC (arch) over the destroyed reactor at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Chornobyl NPP.

The initiative is coordinated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) through the International Chernobyl Cooperation Fund (ICCA).

Subsidies for Ukraine were distributed as follows:

TheEuropean Commission – €25 million. These funds are provided for emergency repairs highlighted after the Russian drone attack in February 2025 to stop further destruction of the NSC and loss of radiation safety.

France – €10.6 million. In July, the EBRD confirmed that France would contribute a significant portion of the €10 million to immediately repair the NSC’s anti-slip shell, which was damaged during the attack. The amount was announced at a donor meeting in May.

The United Kingdom – €6.9 million. The United Kingdom also confirmed its support during the donor meeting. The total donation amounts to €6.7-6.9 million, which will be used to urgently stabilize the NSC structure.

In addition to the €42.5 million, Grant Agreement No. 5 also includes €5 million to assess the damage and strengthen temporary protective measures.

According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection, international partners now support both a detailed assessment of the damage and temporary repairs until the NSC is fully functional.

Causes and urgency

A Russian drone attack on February 14, 2025 severely damaged the outer layer of the NSC arch. The facilities that ensure the 100-year lifetime of the confidentiality were completely disabled.

The threat lies in the risk of water intrusion, which can cause radioactive dust emissions or damage to drainage and destructive systems. French experts have already called for the immediate start of work against rainwater.

Options for temporary repairs are currently being studied: sealing the shell, replacing damaged panels, and purchasing additional materials.

In parallel, a detailed intensive technical assessment is being carried out by ChNPP and EBRD experts. After the diagnostics, they will prepare a restoration project for the complete restoration of the arch, including strengthening and long-term safety management.
