29 January 16:55

Ukraine has received the first batch of energy equipment from the German government as part of a winter emergency support package, the volume of which has been increased to €120 million. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Together with German Ambassador to Ukraine Heiko Tomsch, she welcomed the first shipment, which included two cogeneration units, generators, and other critical equipment.

According to the head of government, this equipment has already been put into operation and will provide electricity and heat to more than 86,000 residents of Kyiv, as well as hospitals, kindergartens, and schools.

What else will be delivered to Ukraine

As part of the same emergency support package, Ukraine is expected to receive the following in the near future:

  • 41 cogeneration units with a total capacity of 40.8 MW
  • 76 modular boiler rooms
  • 300 solar power plants
  • 375 battery storage units for backup power
  • 15 mobile hybrid generators
  • 10 pellet heating systems
  • 45 units of construction equipment for emergency repairs

This equipment is expected to provide light and heat to millions of people across the country, particularly in the context of regular Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Additional support from Germany

In addition to technical assistance, Germany has also:

  • provided €60 million for humanitarian needs;
  • contributed €167 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, which was received in December.

The Ukrainian government calls Germany one of its biggest partners in providing support since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Gas infrastructure and the role of partners

Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a meeting with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretsky. The main topics were the consequences of Russian attacks on oil and gas infrastructure and the process of its restoration.

According to the president, Ukraine:

  • maintains a reliable gas supply for the population;
  • is importing sufficient volumes of gas and has diversified its supply channels;
  • is working to restore and replace damaged equipment.

It was also reported that a new agreement worth €50 million had been signed with the European Investment Bank. The EIB and the EBRD remain the main financial partners in the energy sector.

According to the president, Naftogaz imports more than 50% of the electricity it consumes, which, he says, helps to stabilize the country’s entire energy system.
