Ukraine plans to build 1 GW of power generation capacity by the end of the year

Russia has destroyed half of Ukraine’s energy capacity, but the Ukrainian government has plans to restore it. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this during a conference on the restoration of Ukraine in Berlin, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
“As a result of strikes by Russian missiles and drones, 9 GW of capacity has already been destroyed. The peak energy consumption in Ukraine last winter was 18 GW. So, half of it is now gone. putin has destroyed 80% of thermal and one third of hydro generation. And this is not the limit of Russian terror. But we must set a limit and start restoring generation,”
– he said.
According to the KSE, Russia has caused $56.2 billion in damage to the Ukrainian energy sector. But Russia is only “getting its feet wet” in the Ukrainian energy system, and other countries may expect similar strikes, the president said. A rebuilt Ukrainian energy system will serve both Ukraine and Europe. Therefore, Zelenskyy is convinced that Europe and Ukraine should do everything possible to preserve the existing generation and restore the lost ones to the maximum.
“In this area, European and, in particular, German companies are technological leaders. We have a clear plan to build up to 1 gigawatt of capacity this year. And another 4 gigawatts in the coming years,”
– zelenskyy said.
He called on European partners to invest in rebuilding the Ukrainian energy system.
“Ukraine has a natural basis for energy, but without your investment, we will not be able to implement it. We are not talking about grants, but about highly profitable investments for your companies, a large market for your equipment, and loan programmes for your institutions,”
– president Zelenskyy assured.
Meanwhile, Ukrenergo has restored the line connecting the Ukrainian power system with the European one.
