Ukraine reinforces its skies with two more Patriots: five facts to know

1 January 11:31

Ukraine has reinforced its air defense with two more Patriot systems, which have already begun to protect cities and critical infrastructure. As previously reported by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, this was achieved through agreements with the German government. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Ministry of Defense.

Patriot is a US-made anti-aircraft missile system that is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including high-speed and complex targets. Thanks to its multi-layered approach, Patriot provides a reliable shield for large cities and strategic sites.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine outlined five main advantages of these systems.

1) Versatility

The system is capable of destroying a wide range of aerodynamic and ballistic targets, including hypersonic ones. Patriot missiles intercept threats such as Zircon and Dagger, which reach ultra-high speeds.

2) High efficiency

The Patriot’s ultra-precise radar detects and tracks multiple targets simultaneously. The interceptors (in particular, the PAC-3 MSE) operate on the principle of direct engagement, which is critical for defense against ballistic missiles.

3) Multitasking

A single Patriot battery can detect up to 100 targets and track up to 8 simultaneously, which allows it to repel massive attacks.

4) Automatic operation

Automatic operation provides an instant response to threats – a key advantage when intercepting high-speed and hypersonic missiles.

5) Range and altitude of destruction

Patriot destroys airborne targets at altitudes up to 24 km and at distances up to 160 km, covering large areas and strengthening echeloned defense.

Currently, Patriot systems are reducing losses from cruise and ballistic missile attacks on energy and civilian facilities.

As a reminder, on December 17, Denys Shmyhal announced the signing of a number of important agreements with German partners worth more than EUR 1.2 billion. Thanks to the agreements between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany has pledged to allocate €11.5 billion to support Ukraine next year.
