The Ukrainian national soccer team has ended its bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing 1–3 to Sweden in the playoff semifinals, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The match took place on neutral ground in Valencia.
The defeat not only dashed the “Blue and Yellows'” hopes of playing in the World Cup but may also affect the future of head coach Serhiy Rebrov.
How the Ukraine-Sweden match unfolded
The Ukrainian team controlled possession and tried to dictate the pace of the game, but failed to capitalize on their attacking opportunities.
The Swedes, on the other hand, made the most of their chances. The first goal came from a quick attack finished by forward Viktor Djokeres.
After the break, the situation only worsened for the Ukrainians. Despite attempts to step up their play, the Swedish national team scored again, doubling their lead.
Later, Djökeres earned a penalty and converted it himself, completing a hat trick and effectively sealing the match’s outcome.
Ukraine’s lone goal was scored by debutant Matviy Ponomarenko in the 90th minute, but it had no impact on the final result.
Why Ukraine Lost
The team’s main problem was low efficiency in attack. Despite controlling the ball, the Ukrainian players created few dangerous chances.
Experts also note:
- poor finishing;
- problems finishing attacks;
- defensive errors;
- a weak response to the opponent’s counterattacks.
The Swedish team, on the other hand, demonstrated high finishing ability and discipline.
A historic defeat
This defeat was particularly painful, as Ukraine had never previously lost to Sweden in official matches.
Thus, this very game broke the positive streak in head-to-head matchups.
Will Serhiy Rebrov remain coach
Following the failure to qualify for the World Cup, experts have already begun discussing potential personnel changes within the coaching staff.
There have been no official statements yet, but the defeat could call into question Serhiy Rebrov’s future with the national team.
As a reminder, he took over the national team with the ambitious goal of bringing Ukraine back to major tournaments.
When Ukraine last played in the World Cup
The Ukrainian national team last participated in the World Cup finals in 2006 in Germany.
At that time, the team, led by Oleg Blokhin, reached the quarterfinals, which remains the best result in the history of Ukrainian soccer.
What’s next for the Ukrainian national team
After failing to qualify, the team will focus on preparing for other international tournaments, including:
- Nations League matches;
- Euro qualifiers;
- friendly matches to refresh the squad.
On March 31, the Ukrainian national team will play a friendly match against Albania at the same venue. The game will kick off at 9:45 p.m. Kyiv time.
