Ukraine – Romania: where to watch Euro 2024 broadcast

17 June 2024 09:54

Today, 17 June, the Ukrainian national team opens the European Football Championship. At 16:00 Kyiv time at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Ukraine will play Romania in the first match of the group stage within Group E, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

The teams will meet each other for the first time in an official match, although they have experience of six friendly games (2 wins for Ukraine, 3 for Romania and 1 draw).

The Ukrainian national team is approaching the tournament as one of the most successful teams on the continent in recent years. At Euro 2020, the Yellow and Blues reached the quarter-finals. This time, they will be assisted by a new coach, Serhii Rebrov.

Romania, led by Eduard Iordănescu, confidently approached the final part by winning the qualifying group. However, the team has not left the Euro group stage for 24 years.

Both national teams have players who played for the same club or were even partners. This will add a special spicy flavour to the confrontation. In particular, Romanian forwards Gheorghe Puscas and Radu Dragusin played together with Ukrainian midfielder Ruslan Malinowski in Genoa in the first half of the 2023/24 season. And the day before, Valentyn Migaila was Malinowski’s teammate at Atalanta in the 2021/22 season.

In addition, the Ukrainian coach Serhii Rebrov, as head coach, opposed the Romanian clubs FCSB (formerly Steaua) and Astra in European competitions. In the 2006/07 Champions League match, Rebrov scored for Dynamo against Steaua. Later, his team defeated FCSB twice in the group stage of the 2014/15 Europa League, where Nicolae Stancu played for the Romanian club. These direct connections between players and coaches will certainly add intrigue and motivation to both teams.

Recently, Romania has been successful thanks to teamwork, winning the qualifying group. This is a very disciplined team. They have very good young players. This is a team that understands what it has at its disposal. They have very fast performers, good discipline, and thanks to this they made it to Euro 2024.

Head coach of the Ukrainian national team Serhii Rebrov on the Romanian national team

We respect the Ukrainian national team. Their coach has achieved incredible results, but when the match starts, many of these things no longer matter. We have to be smart and not be afraid. We are ready for any scenario. We want to find solutions while staying true to our identity. We have to be the best at certain moments, otherwise it will be very difficult. Ukraine has many great players.

Romania head coach Edward Iordănescu on the match

It is a great honour to represent Ukraine. The fact that I am here now is a merit of our soldiers who are defending Ukraine. They are incredible people who take on everything with their courage. I am very grateful to them. This will be a very emotional moment for us. When you see the Ukrainian flags at the stadium and understand what is happening at home, it is hard to put into words. Every day is hard, people die every day. We understand where we are and what we have to do. There will be an emotional moment before the match, but we need to keep our cool and give our best.
