President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Portugal Luis Montenegro signed a statement of intent to cooperate in the production of maritime drones. The countries also plan to expand cooperation in the defense and economic sectors.

Zelenskyy and Montenegro announced this during a press conference in Kyiv on December 20, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Suspilne.

“Portugal is ready to take concrete steps to jointly produce drones. And to use Ukrainian knowledge in this area, and we wanted to share our experience with Ukraine, our scientific achievements that could be useful for Ukraine. This is the purpose of the statement we signed,” the Portuguese Prime Minister said.

He also called maritime drones “one of the most promising areas in the defense sector today.”

Luis Montenegro also said that Portugal has already transferred 600 thousand euros of aid to Ukraine for the energy sector.

“The Portuguese are actively involved in helping Ukrainian energy companies, because Portugal has enough knowledge and capabilities in this area, as well as international companies that can share their experience,” the Portuguese Prime Minister said.

Luis Montenegro said that the Portuguese government is considering opportunities for cooperation with Ukraine in the defense and economic sectors.

“We will make significant investments in Ukraine’s defense sector in the near future. It will receive support from NATO over the next ten years, which will strengthen the economy. President Zelenskyy understands that the defense sector is key to the country’s military resilience, and we are ready to cooperate in this area. We must work in the context of economic globalization and promote the development of joint projects. These are the areas I have mentioned that have the greatest potential for partnership between Ukraine and Portugal,” the Portuguese Prime Minister said about the details of the talks.

Earlier it became known that the Prime Minister of Portugal arrived in Kyiv on an official visit on December 20. This is Montenegro’s first visit to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war.
