Ukraine and Romania to jointly manufacture combat drones: what is known

13 March 04:08

On Thursday, March 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Romanian counterpart Nicușor Dan signed several agreements in Bucharest on strategic partnership between their countries, including joint production of strike drones in Romania using Ukrainian expertise and with the support of the European Union’s SAFE defense fund, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the dpa agency.

Another agreement, on energy, provides for the launch of two new power lines between Romania and the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine. In addition, the presidents discussed potential cooperation between their countries in oil and gas production in the Black Sea.

Volodymyr Zelensky promised to strengthen the protection of the Romanian minority in Ukraine. Previously, the situation of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine had caused friction between the two countries. However, the former “historical mistrust” between Kyiv and Bucharest dissipated with the start of Russia’s aggressive war, said Nicușor Dan.

The Ukrainian president plans to conclude his visit to Romania with a visit to an air base near the city of Fetesti in the southeast of the country, where Ukrainian military personnel are training to fly F-16 fighter jets.

Germany has already started joint production of drones with Ukraine

In December, it was announced that Ukrainian drone manufacturer Frontline Robotics and German defense company Quantum Systems would begin production of combat drones in Germany on behalf of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. This factory, whose location is classified, was jointly opened on February 13 in the presence of Zelensky and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
