Ukraine is working with the European Union on legislative changes that will allow for the confiscation of Russian and Iranian oil from ships in the “shadow fleet.”
This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to [Komersant], citing his video address.
According to Zelenskyy, the focus is on establishing legal mechanisms to be applied after such tankers are stopped.
The head of state emphasized that this should be part of a systematic response to Russia’s attempts to circumvent sanctions through illegal oil shipments.
Earlier, he welcomed the detention by European countries of a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker and called for not only blocking such vessels but also confiscating the oil they carry in the interests of European security.
Specifically, this refers to France’s detention of a sanctioned vessel carrying Russian oil that was sailing under the flag of another country. The tanker was spotted in the Mediterranean Sea; the operation took place several days ago.
“This tanker is already under sanctions from Ukraine, the UK, the European Union, and the United States. But the Russians are still using it. It systematically transports not only Russian but also Iranian oil,” Zelenskyy stated.
The president also called Russia and Iran accomplices and called for even greater pressure on Moscow.
As is known, Russia’s “shadow fleet” is a network of vessels that Moscow uses to circumvent Western sanctions and export oil, which allows it to continue financing the war against Ukraine.
