Ukraine maintains stable prices for sunflower oil – expert

Despite high demand in the country and on export markets, prices for sunflower oil remain stable due to the efficient operation of the agricultural sector.

This was stated by Leonid Kozachenko, Chairman of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

“In general, oilseeds are more profitable than grains. The total sown area plus compliance with technology, plus breeding gives a good result and we harvest more,” he emphasized.

The expert also noted the development of the processing industry.

“We have created a very powerful processing industry. Now its capacity is about 2-2.5 times higher than the available volumes of raw materials. Due to this competition, the price of sunflower oil does not grow significantly,” he explained.

Mr. Kozachenko notes that specialized associations and legislative initiatives help to keep some of the products inside the country:

“Sometimes there was a situation when the demand abroad was high, and we exported a lot of sunflower. Duties on sunflower exports were introduced to keep farmers in the domestic market and create better conditions for processing. This created the conditions for large investments in the processing of this raw material in the domestic market and gave Ukraine the first place in the global market for the export of sunflower oil,” he explains.

Ukraine is the largest producer and exporter of sunflower oil in the world, supplying about half of the global market. Before the war, annual exports exceeded 5 million tons. Despite the hostilities and logistical constraints, the country has maintained its position as a key player in the global market.

Fluctuations in sunflower oil prices affect not only Ukraine but also the global food balance, as alternative suppliers such as Turkey, Russia, and Argentina cannot fully compensate for possible Ukrainian losses.
