11 August 2025 20:16
On August 6, the sea channel of the Bystre mouth, which connects the Danube River with the Black Sea, was reopened for navigation. This was reported by the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority on its Telegram channel, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Conditions of passage
- Shipping is allowed for vessels with a draft of up to 4.5 meters
- Traffic is carried out exclusively during daylight hours
- Pilotage is mandatory
Before the opening of the canal, a number of works were carried out, including: - Depth measurements and technical survey
- Mine clearance of the area near the emergency dredger “Ingulsky”
- Checking the technical condition of the canal
- Coordination with the Ukrainian Navy and other relevant services
History of closure
The Bystre estuary was closed after the start of the full-scale invasion due to cases of vessels being blown up by sea mines. It was first reopened in August 2022, when small river-sea bulk carriers, including the Chelsea (138 m long, 6135 tons displacement), were able to use the canal.
Later, traffic was suspended again to carry out hydrographic works, including deepening the bottom to allow for the passage of larger vessels.
The resumption of shipping through Bystre is an important step for Ukrainian logistics and international trade, especially in times of war.
