US News and World Report has updated its ranking of the military power of the world’s countries. In 2024, Ukraine ranks 8th in the ranking, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

This year, Ukraine is ranked between the UK (7th) and Germany (9th).

Russia, quite unexpectedly, took the top spot. The United States is only second in the ranking, and Israel is third. China, South Korea and Iran follow.

It should be noted that this ranking is calculated through a survey. 17,000 respondents from around the world evaluate each nation in detail on a variety of attributes, including military strength. The authors of the ranking divided the respondents into three categories:

  • the informed elite, i.e. people with higher education who consider themselves middle or upper class and who read or watch the news at least four days a week;
  • business decision makers, i.e. senior managers in an organisation or small business owners who employ others;
  • the general public, i.e. adults aged 18 and over who are nationally representative of their country in terms of age and gender.

That is, although the developers of the rating insist on the high “quality” of the sample, it is, in fact, just a questionnaire.

Last year, Ukraine was ranked 6th in this rating. So this time, it reflects how the world’s attitude to the Armed Forces has changed after the unsuccessful years of 2023-2024 at the front.

There is also a ranking of the world’s most powerful armies by Global Firepower. The Ukrainian Armed Forces ranked 18th in 2024.
