Ukraine’s women’s beach volleyball team, Marina Gladun and Tatiana Lazarenko, won historic gold at the European Championships in Dusseldorf. The Ukrainians beat the French Clemence Vieira and Aline Chamereau with a score of 2:1. This was reported by the National Olympic Committee, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Prior to this, Ukrainian athletes had never gone further than the 1/8 finals, and the maximum in the country’s history was the men’s bronze medal. However, at this tournament, Gladun and Lazarenko confidently went through three rounds of the playoffs, knocking out duos from Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain in turn.
“Despite losing the first set to their rivals from France (21:23), our girls did not give up and managed to win the next two sets – 21:18, 16:14. On the way to the final, the Ukrainians did not lose a single match – 6 wins out of 6! This is the first ever gold medal in the history of Ukraine at the continental beach volleyball championship,” the statement said.
The NOC, together with President Vadym Gutzeit, congratulated Maryna and Tetiana, the team’s coaching staff, the Ukrainian Beach Volleyball Federation headed by Igor Molotok, as well as the entire volleyball community on this outstanding achievement.
