In the first seven months of 2024, Ukraine spent one trillion hryvnias on security and defence. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the funds were used to pay salaries to the military, food, purchase equipment, etc.

“This is 58.1% of the total expenditures of the general fund of the state budget. Of this amount, UAH 161.6 billion was used from the state budget in July,” the Ministry said.

The funds were allocated for

  • financial support for military personnel, rank-and-file and senior officers, and police officers;
  • purchase of military/specialised equipment, weapons, ammunition, defence products, personal protective equipment (helmets, body armour and other special equipment), fuels and lubricants, and food
  • medical support;
  • other expenses to support the activities of the relevant bodies and formations.

The Ministry of Finance noted that military expenditures are covered exclusively by domestic revenues and borrowings.

“Security and defence remains an absolute priority and the largest item of state budget expenditures. We urge you to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine by paying taxes in good faith and investing in military bonds, as these are the main sources of funding for Ukraine’s security and defence,” the Ministry of Finance said.
