1 May 21:22
Ukraine’s national ice hockey team defeated Poland on the penultimate game day of the World Championship in Division 1A, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The match started cautiously on both sides. The first period was even, despite the forced changes in the Ukrainian team due to the injury of Krivoshapkin. Neither team managed to score a goal in the opening period.
At the beginning of the second period, the Ukrainians could have taken the lead when Fadeev successfully passed to Deniskin, who sent the puck into the net, but the goal was disallowed after a video review. Shortly afterward, Deniskin received his first penalty of the match. While playing in the minority, the Ukrainian team created several dangerous counterattacks through the efforts of Tracht and Zakharov, but the Polish team still took advantage of its numerical advantage and opened the scoring.
Although the Ukrainians failed to realize two power play attempts, the team equalized the score with equal numbers. Zakharov successfully picked up the puck after an active offense and hit the net. The second period ended with a score of 1:1.
In the final period, the Ukrainians showed incredible character and endurance. Dmytro Khrystych’s team scored three unanswered goals, although not without a bit of luck in defense. Thanks to teamwork and timely goals, the Blue and Yellows won with a total score of 4:1.
