Ukraine has introduced new sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet”: what is known
13 February 12:15
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree enacting the decision of the National Security and Defense Council to impose sanctions on 91 ships that are part of Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
This was announced by the Office of the President, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
It is reported that Russia used these tankers to export oil from the ports of Novorossiysk, Ust-Luga, and Primorsk to third countries. Such shipments were carried out in circumvention of international restrictions imposed by the EU and G7 countries.
This is evidenced by monitoring results in the Black, Red, and Baltic Seas.
“The sanctioned vessels sailed under the flags of about 20 countries. Among them, only one was Russian, while the rest were flags of Panama, Liberia, Cameroon, Barbados, the Marshall Islands, Hong Kong, Sierra Leone, Tonga, Palau, Guinea, the Comoros, the Bahamas, Indonesia, Malawi, Guinea-Bissau, Djibouti, Guyana, and Eswatini,” the statement said.
The OP also noted that Ukraine will share this info with these countries and will work with partners to further sync up sanctions in their jurisdictions.
Of the ships on the list, 27 are already under sanctions imposed by the US, the UK, Switzerland, and the EU. Preparations are currently underway to impose restrictions on the remaining 64 ships.
“Tankers in the shadow fleet are a key tool for circumventing oil sanctions, so their identification and the imposition of sanctions against them must be done quickly and without exception. Each such vessel should be considered as part of the financing of the Russian war machine,” emphasized Vladislav Vlasyuk, advisor to the president on sanctions policy.
Earlier, Zelensky signed a decree imposing new sanctions against companies that service the Russian tanker fleet and transport sanctioned oil, as well as against Kremlin propagandists.
