Ukraine has significantly reduced exports of beef and cattle: what are the main reasons?

In January 2026, Ukraine reduced exports of cattle by 36% and frozen beef by 34% compared to December 2025. The main factors behind the decline were the seasonal lull in the market, complex logistics, and a temporary drop in consumer demand amid high prices for red meat.

This was reported by the Milk Producers Association (MPA), according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Ukrainian exports

Last month, approximately 958 tons of live cattle were exported. Cash proceeds in this segment amounted to $1.82 million, which is 46% less than in December 2025.

Ukrainian exporters supplied 292 tons of fresh or chilled beef to foreign markets. Export revenue amounted to $2.22 million, which is 35% more than in December 2025.

The actual volume of frozen beef exports from Ukraine in January 2026 amounted to 966 tons, which is 34% less than in December 2025, but 31% less than in January 2025. Monetary proceeds for the goods delivered amounted to almost $4.62 million, which is 33% less than in December 2025, but 13% less than in January 2025.

Reasons for the decline

Analyst Georgy Kukhiashvili highlights several key factors that influenced the market.

“The decline in beef and cattle exports in January is likely due to increased shelling of port infrastructure by Russian occupiers, which has led to higher logistics costs. Farmers are forced to spend money on risk insurance, additional security measures, and route changes,” the expert notes.

Global trends and forecasts

The European market is seeing a trend of consumers switching to poultry due to the high cost of red meat. At the same time, China is accelerating purchases from Brazil ahead of the introduction of protective quotas.

According to Rabobank’s forecast, global beef production may decline in 2026. The US and Canada are rebuilding their herds, while Brazil is keeping cows for herd regeneration. In the EU, production is constrained by environmental and regulatory restrictions. Experts suggest that beef prices will remain high throughout the year.
