Ukraine appeals to the IAEA over Russia’s massive strikes on the energy system

10 November 22:55

Ukraine is initiating the convening of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in connection with a new wave of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. This was announced by Deputy Energy Minister of Ukraine Mykola Kolisnyk, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to him, after the last massive attack, the situation in the power system remains difficult – emergency repair work is underway, and power engineers are working around the clock. Russia has once again struck at key elements of the power system’s technological scheme, which has affected the stability of power supply across the country.

“The Ministry of Energy is in constant contact with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. Ukraine appealed to the Agency to urgently convene the Board of Governors. The goal is to develop mechanisms to prevent Russian attacks on critical infrastructure and to increase international pressure on nuclear and radiation safety,” Kolisnyk emphasized.

Currently, most regions have hourly power outage schedules in place for both residential and business consumers.

The government is urging citizens to consume electricity sparingly, as even though the schedules have been optimized, it is still impossible to completely avoid restrictions.

State of the power system

Despite the significant damage, power engineers are working continuously to restore the equipment as soon as possible.

Currently, Ukraine is in the mode of stabilization blackouts, which may last for several weeks.

As reported, on the night of Saturday, November 8, the Russian army launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The strikes damaged a number of energy facilities, and most regions are subject to electricity consumption restrictions of 2 to 4 rounds.

The Ukrainian side insists that the shelling of the energy system is a gross violation of international law and poses a risk not only to energy but also to the nuclear security of Europe.
