Ukraine will face a very difficult period until September: Zelenskyy explains why

10 April 14:55

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the coming months will be very difficult for the country. According to him, even if Russia chooses the path of de-escalation, political, diplomatic, and military pressure on Ukraine may still intensify. That is why the head of state described the period leading up to September as particularly challenging.

The president made this statement during a meeting with journalists, reports "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Interfax-Ukraine.

Zelenskyy outlined his vision for the coming months and explained why spring and summer could become one of the most tense periods for Ukraine in 2026.

Why Zelenskyy considers the period leading up to September to be very difficult

According to the president, Russia, in his opinion, is not ready to end the war. At the same time, he suggested that if Moscow does choose the path of de-escalation, new diplomatic steps are possible, including an attempt to hold a trilateral meeting as early as April, May, or June.

Zelenskyy identified these months as key. In his view, spring and early summer could become a time of particularly intense pressure on Ukraine—both at the diplomatic level and directly on the battlefield.

“In my view, these people are definitely not ready to end the war. There is still a segment of their society that would react negatively to an escalation. In my view, these are the two main scenarios, but, of course, there may be other motivations. And soon we will see which scenario Putin has chosen. If Russia chooses the path of de-escalation, then I believe there will be a trilateral meeting. And they will try to hold it in April, May, or June. I think these are key months for them. And I think it will be very difficult for us until September,” he said during a meeting with journalists.

What Zelenskyy said about pressure on Ukraine

The president emphasized that this period will be difficult politically and diplomatically. He stressed that pressure on Ukraine could intensify in several areas at once.

In particular, according to him, the following are possible in the spring and summer:

  • political pressure;
  • diplomatic pressure;
  • military pressure on the front lines.

At the same time, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine understands its own national interests and knows exactly what can guarantee its security.

Why April, May, and June Are Important

The president noted that April, May, and June could be key months for attempts to influence the situation surrounding the war. If Russia chooses the path of de-escalation, political negotiations and attempts to organize new meetings could intensify during this period.

However, even in such a case, according to the logic of Zelenskyy’s statement, this would not automatically mean relief for Ukraine. On the contrary, such a period could become a time of serious challenges, when Kyiv will be forced to withstand pressure while simultaneously defending its key interests.

How the U.S. Might Influence the Situation

Separately, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that starting in early summer, the United States will be deeply immersed in its domestic electoral processes. This, he said, will also affect the overall international situation and may create additional difficulties for Ukraine.

“In other words, this spring and summer will be quite difficult politically and diplomatically. There may be pressure on Ukraine. And there will be pressure on the battlefield as well. But we understand what Ukraine’s national interests are and what can guarantee our security,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

Thus, the president effectively indicated that spring and summer will be difficult not only because of Russia’s actions but also due to the broader international political context.

What Zelenskyy said about Russia

The president made it clear that he does not believe Russia is ready to end the war quickly. That is why he considers it particularly important that in the coming months, pressure be felt not only by Ukraine but also by the Russian Federation itself.

According to Zelenskyy, without sufficient international pressure on the Kremlin, the situation can only get worse.

What role does Zelenskyy assign to partners

The head of state emphasized that Ukraine’s partners could hold an unprecedented, historic, and watershed NATO summit as early as this year. In his view, such a summit could send an extremely important signal not only to Ukraine but to the entire security system.

“For example, partners could hold an absolutely unprecedented, historic, pivotal, and, in a certain sense, victorious NATO summit this year. But it depends on them—what they are truly ready for and whether they take a responsible approach to the threats that are directed not against any one country, but against everyone,” the head of state concluded.

Zelenskyy effectively made it clear that the further course of events will also depend on how responsibly international partners address the threats that currently exist not against a single state, but against all.
