Ukraine – weapons, Russia – sanctions: Senator Graham recalls that he is a “friend of Ukraine”

10 March 2025 10:42

US Senator from the Republican Party Lindsey Graham has called for the resumption of aid to Ukraine and announced that he will submit a new bill on sanctions against Russia this week. This was reported by the Voice of America with reference to the lawmaker’s Sunday interview with Fox News Sunday, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

As a reminder, after the meeting between the American and Ukrainian presidents at the White House on February 28, Senator Lindsey Graham accused Volodymyr Zelenskyy of disrespect, called on him to apologize, and suggested that the Ukrainian president should resign.

In a Sunday interview with Fox News, the Republican senator repeated his criticism of the Ukrainian president’s behavior during the Oval Office meeting, but he did not limit himself to that. Apparently, given how catastrophically the subsequent events unfolded.

Senator on weapons for Ukraine

Lindsey Graham expressed concern over the U.S. government’s decision to suspend arms and intelligence transfers to Ukraine.

“If we abandon Ukraine, it will be worse than in Afghanistan, and I don’t think President Trump has any desire to do that,” the U.S. lawmaker said, adding. – “Before there is a ceasefire, I would give the Ukrainians what they need in terms of intelligence and weapons to defend themselves.

The senator is convinced that without providing Ukraine with the necessary weapons, peace talks will be meaningless.

“You can’t help resolve the conflict if you don’t provide Ukraine with intelligence and resources to defend itself while the fighting is ongoing,” Graham said.

According to him, the goal is to end the war with honor and justice.

Senator on sanctions for Russia

Lindsey Graham has announced that he will introduce a new bill on sanctions against Russia this week.

He said that he would propose sanctions against Russia – against their banking sector and energy sector – to encourage them to come to the negotiating table.

“If they don’t agree to a ceasefire and peaceful negotiations with the administration, we have to impose hellacious sanctions on them and I will introduce a bill to that effect,” Graham assured.

Last Friday, apparently in response to another massive Russian attack on Ukrainian cities, US President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of increasing economic and banking sanctions against Russia.

“Based on the fact that Russia is “smashing” Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering broad-based banking sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs against Russia until a final peaceful settlement and ceasefire is reached. To Russia and Ukraine: come to the table now before it’s too late,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

It’s been almost a week since the US suspended military aid to Ukraine

Fox News reported that the United States is pausing military aid to Ukraine “until President Trump decides that the Ukrainians are committed to good faith peace talks.”

Referring to a senior Trump administration official, Fox News clarified that it was a temporary pause in aid.

The next day, it became known that the United States had completely stopped sharing all intelligence information with Ukraine, including that which could be used to strike Russian troops in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

And the day before, Forbes reported that the US administration’s suspension of military aid to Ukraine also includes support for radar jammers on F-16s.
