Ukrainian company announces first “green” sugar produced using biomethane: what we know
27 February 20:23
Ukrainian company Hals Agro has begun producing certified eco-friendly sugar using biomethane.
This was reported by the industry publication Latifundist , citing the company’s director Serhiy Kravchuk, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to Kravchuk, the company supplied biomethane to its sugar factory and received certificates confirming the production of “green” sugar.
What is biomethane?
Biomethane is a renewable analogue of natural gas. It is produced by fermenting organic raw materials rather than extracted from the ground.
The use of biomethane reduces the carbon footprint of products. The company claims that the sugar produced complies with EU climate regulations.
Kravchuk also noted that, according to him, many European manufacturers continue to use significant amounts of natural gas.
Is the EU ready?
According to the company’s CEO, EU countries are not yet fully ready to introduce biomethane in sugar production due to the lack of a single biomethane register.
In his opinion, this complicates the scaling of such projects across the entire market.
Market and competition
In 2025, Ukraine exported 463,700 tons of sugar worth $222 million.
At the same time, in the fall of 2025, sugar prices in Europe fell to a three-year low, mainly due to excess stocks and increased supplies from Ukraine.
European sugar and sugar beet producers subsequently called on European institutions to restrict imports of raw sugar, particularly from Ukraine.
